The Essentials

PhDs: Price Theory Scholar Program

The Price Theory Scholar Program allows PhD students in economics from other universities to experience and learn to apply price theory in the Chicago tradition during a one-quarter residency at the University of Chicago in fall quarter 2017. Selected students are enrolled in the first quarter of the Price Theory sequence taught by Kevin M. Murphy. The course emphasizes the application of simple economic principles to important real-world problems.

The selected Price Theory Scholar will be awarded a stipend in the amount of $15,000. Generous support for this program has been provided by Searle Freedom Trust.

Established in 2006, the Price Theory Scholars Program is geared toward students who are in their third or fourth year of study, but applications are accepted from doctoral candidates of all levels.

How to Apply
Candidates for the Price Theory Scholars Program must be nominated by a professor or adviser. While applications are submitted by the candidates, recommendations are not accepted directly from the candidates themselves.

The following materials are required to be submitted by June 10, 2017:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two (2) letters of nomination that include an assessment of the candidate’s work and promise
